The time has come and gone to say something about John Lennon’s album Walls and Bridges, released September 26, 1974. But I got obsessed with politics, with the result that I personally saved democracy and helped usher in a new golden age of peace, love, and enlightenment.

Oh, wait, that didn’t happen. Things are fucked. Well, back to business.

Walls and Bridges is a strange record because though it was made at a time of great turmoil in John’s life, and the lyrics reflect this, musically it mostly lopes along in a pleasant Seventies groove. 1974 was “an extraordinary year for me personally,” said JL. “And I’m almost amazed that I could get anything out. But I enjoyed doing Walls and Bridges and it wasn’t hard when I had the whole thing to go into the studio and do it. I’m surprised it wasn’t just all bluuuuuuggggghhhhh.”

No, it wasn’t that. I’m not sure what it is exactly… in point of fact I never heard it in its entirety until last week. So to buy myself some time — and to give myself something to write about other than The Ugliness — I’m going to do a post on each song. Starting… tomorrow? We’ll see.
