Today’s session, which was devoted to “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” marked the last time all four Beatles would be in the studio together. This was also the day on which John Lennon made the fateful decision to end “I Want You” by having Geoff Emerick just cut the tape at a specific point, rather than having the song resolve itself or fade out.

Everyone thought John was nuts. (Factoid: At this point the sides of Abbey Road were in the opposite order from the one we know, so the abrupt edit would have been the end of the album.) But in the end (cough), they were forced to admit that it worked. Sometimes that’s the right way to end something: just cut and walk away.
