There was a recording session today at which The Beatles worked on “I Want You” — adding congas (which one is hard-pressed to hear in the final mix) and organ — and proceeded to lay down 26 takes of Paul’s “Oh! Darling.” In the midst of this, there was a jam session during which they messed around with American singer-songwriter Joe South’s recent hit “Games People Play”:
Time is tight today but before I go, here are three factoids about Joe South:
- He began his career with a novelty record called “The Purple People Eater Meets the Witch Doctor.”
- He wrote “Hush,” which became a huge hit for Deep Purple.
- His songs were covered by Elvis, Bryan Ferry, Syl Johnson, Carol Burnett, Jim Nabors, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, Ike & Tina Turner, and Hank Williams Jr. Not exactly a lightweight.
