Also released on this weekend in 1968 — with considerably less fanfare than the White Album — was The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society. Like The Beatles, the Kinks had taken a conscious step away from psychedelia (the cover notwithstanding), and this album has a decisively retro feel to it. Some people think it’s their best; I’m not necessarily qualified to judge, but it’s a damn good one.
