I’m a little pissed right now because I just realized I missed, back on December 1, the release of the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s second album, Axis: Bold As Love. For my money this is Jimi’s best record, better even than Are You Experienced?, which is no slouch itself.
Then again, what would I really say about it? It must be heard to be believed. Unfortunately Jimi’s estate is very uptight about copyrights, and refuses to post his music on YouTube (the top three results on YT for “Bold As Love” are for John Mayer’s version of the title track, a fact that makes me want to hurl). They were at least kind enough to share this moderately enlightening mini-documentary:
There is no direct Beatles connection here that I’m aware of, except that we know Hendrix admired and was influenced by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. But I have no qualms about saying that Axis is a better album than Sgt. Pepper. If you don’t believe me, I encourage you to find it on Spotify or wherever, smoke ’em if you’ve got ’em, and prepare to have your mind blown. I can’t think of many better ways to use 39 of the remaining minutes of 2017.
I will give it a listen, but I think I better wait til tomorrow…..
Nice.
A forceful claim, “better than ‘Are You Experienced.” I beg to differ, though I agree it’s better than Sgt. Pepper’s.
Well, there is a “for my money” in there. Party it’s because the songs on “Axis” aren’t as overexposed – I didn’t really know any of them until I bought the album back in the early 90s.
