Today I am told that all four Beatles went to see Donovan perform at the Saville Theatre in London. A pretty big vote of confidence for the Scottish troubadour, who was a Beatles fellow-traveler for many years but has seemingly been relegated to the margins of music history.
Those of us who know know that Donovan is one of the greats. I’m a particular fan of “Sand and Foam,” “Celeste,” and “Barabajagal,” but there are many more terrific songs in his catalog.
50 years later, Donovan is still at it — he posted this tribute to Leonard Cohen just a couple days ago:
There was a time Donovan was just a notch below Beatles/Stones/Dylan in terms of popularity. His album “Sunshine Superman” was revolutionary, far ahead of its time and its release had been delayed for almost a year due to label-wrangling, as I recall. He had a real edge for the first part of his career and then he went full-hippie (analogous to full-retard) with “A gift from a flower to a garden.” And that’s how people perceive him now, unfortunately.
