Today’s Beatles session began with Paul’s third and penultimate go at laying down a lead vocal for “Oh! Darling.”1

After that there was more work on “Come Together,” with John adding new lead vocals and an electric piano part he copied from Paul. “Paul might have been miffed,” about the piano, says Geoff Emerick, “but I think he was more upset about not singing on the choruses — John did his own backing vocals.”

Paul himself said, “I would have liked to sing harmony with John and I think he would have liked me to but I was too embarrassed to ask him.” Which is a sad state of affairs between the two longtime partners who were in many ways closer than brothers — but to paraphrase Walter Cronkite, whose voice is in my head after watching hours of moon landing coverage, that’s the way it was.
