Here in 2017 in the U.S. of A., it’s the day we call Black Friday, which means that I got 97 emails this morning trying to sell me things. None of them was a new Beatles single, which I could have bought if this was 1967 in the UK.

I wonder what people thought when they got home with their copies of the “Hello Goodbye”/“I Am the Walrus” 45. Probably there was a lot of head-scratching going on when they made it to the flip side. Never had the split between The Beatles’ main creative forces been so stark — these two songs don’t sound they were recorded by the same band, or even on the same planet.

How many listens did it take before “I Am the Walrus” started to make sense to the average listener? Probably about as many as it took to get tired of “Hello Goodbye.”
