The bad news: another day of filming for Magical Mystery Tour. The good news: I am informed by reliable sources that this was, for reals, the last one.

Because a cello part had been added to “Blue Jay Way,” The Beatles now wished to include footage of themselves pretending to play cello. I’m not sure why, exactly, but they wanted to and they did. Ringo volunteered his garden as a set, a white cello was procured, and the rest is history.

As “a colourful conclusion,” says Wikipedia, the boys “set off fireworks that had been bought for the upcoming Guy Fawkes Night celebrations.” I feel like celebrating too, perhaps with a bottle of bubbly, but it’s a bit early in the day yet. And anyway it seems kind of inappropriate, given the catastrophe that is about to be unleashed on an unsuspecting world. Instead I’ll just back quietly away and try to fade into the background, as John did in this picture:
