Today was officially the first day of the Summer of Love.

Also the birthdate of one of my favorite people. He knows who he is.

In Beatles news, George Martin and Geoff Emerick created a reference mix of “All You Need Is Love” that they could hand over to the BBC. The purpose of this, says The Beatles Bible, was “to demonstrate to Derek Burrell-Davis, who was directing the BBC’s segment of the Our World satellite broadcast, that a song would be ready in time.”

The broadcast was only four days away at this point, and no doubt a certain amount of anxiety was caused by the fact that a massively complex technical undertaking depended on the reliability of a group of drug-addled rock stars. This can’t have been helped by Paul’s recent admission of his LSD usage.

But they needn’t have worried. Everything was going to be fine, just fine.
