Let it be noted: While Paul and I were daydreaming yesterday, the studio staff was hard at work creating the stereo mixes for Sgt. Pepper. Even at this relatively late date, stereo mixes were something of an afterthought. In The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, engineer Richard Lush is quoted thusly:
The only real version of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is the mono version. The Beatles were there for all the mono mixes. Then, after the album was finished, George Martin, Geoff Emerick and I did the stereo in a few days, just the three of us, without a Beatle in sight.
Speaking of which, where were John, George, and Ringo these days? All the record tells us is that Paul was still hanging out in Denver, where he went to see Jane Asher perform in Romeo and Juliet. And that’s so boring I’m practically falling asleep typing it. If there’s no exciting Beatles news soon I’m going to have to start making shit up.
