After laboring over some of their recent songs for weeks or months, today The Beatles knocked out the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” reprise in a single session. And they did it the old-fashioned way, with George and John on guitar, Paul on bass, and Ringo on the skins. George Martin added organ, the boys did vocals, they threw on some maracas and tambourine, and that was that.
That may be why the song is so crisp and snappy — after so much obsessing over details, it must have been nice to just play some rock’n’roll.
