More work today on “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band,” the song. It’s hard to believe now that it was originally conceived as a standalone piece, not as a framing device; out of context, I’m not sure what the point of it would be. Lyrically this song is a trifle, but works perfectly as an introduction, mood-setter, and palate-cleanser.

It’s also one of The Beatles’ just plain best-sounding songs; it swings and crunches with carefree aplomb, you can nod your head to it, you can play air guitar. This is one of those cases where writing about it seems kind of silly; certainly you have access to “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” — go put it on right now, see if you don’t feel a little bit better.
