Even for the most gifted, the creative process involves a certain amount of futility — sentences written and later deleted, drafts abandoned, sketches crumpled up and tossed away.
Today, for instance, was occupied with recording parts for “Penny Lane” — a McCartney vocal and Lennon and Harrison guitars — that would never be used. Does that mean the time was wasted? Of course not. Every failed attempt makes the one after it better, and it’s the end result that matters — even if the end result is just that you learn that something doesn’t work. It’s all part of the process. Right? Right.
