There was more work today on “When I’m 64” and “Strawberry Fields Forever.” The “64” session, at which only Paul was present, was a simple vocal overdub. But with “Strawberry Fields” they were essentially starting over, recording a new rhythm track to match the score for brass and strings that George Martin had written.
At some point during the day John Lennon, playing around and saying random things on the microphone, happened to mutter the words “cranberry sauce.” Not only did this make it onto the final track, it spawned a conspiracy theory, with some people believing that John was saying “I buried Paul.” In his 1980 interview with Playboy, John had this to say:
I said “Cranberry sauce.” That’s all I said. Some people like ping-pong, other people like digging over graves. Some people will do anything rather than be here now.”
