Late this afternoon The Beatles arrived in Chicago, where their U.S. tour was scheduled to begin the next day. In the evening they faced the assembled press, who mostly wanted to talk about John’s comments vis-a-vis the group’s popularity in comparison to that of Jesus H. Christ.

The boys seemed to find the subject tiresome, and quite frankly so do I. From the vantage point of 50 years later the whole thing seems even more like a tempest in a teapot than it did then. So I’m just going to cut short the spiel for today, and tomorrow we’ll get back to talking about music.
