After filming in the studio yesterday, today The Beatles and the crew led by director Michael Lindsay-Hogg moved to Chiswick House, an “18th century house and gardens in west London” (says The Beatles Bible). There they filmed (on actual film this time, instead of video) a second set of promotional clips for the “Paperback Writer”/“Rain” single that would end up being shown on Top of the Pops.
It appears to have been quite a beautiful day and in the footage the boys seem to be enjoying themselves a bit more than they had in the studio. Except maybe for poor Ringo, who didn’t even get a drum kit to mime on and was reduced to slapping his thighs, despite this being perhaps his best-ever drumming on a Beatles record. He’s a good sport about it, but geez…he’s the drummer in the biggest band in the world, you can’t at least get him a tambourine?
