There was no recording session today, but it was still an important day in Beatles history. “On this night [George] Harrison met Eric Clapton,” says The Beatles Bible — although actually, technically, they had met once before, at a Beatles Christmas show. Today’s meeting took place when George and John went to London’s Marquee Club to see the Lovin’ Spoonful. (No record exists of what they thought of the show.) This being Swinging London, “afterwards,” says the Bible, “Lennon and Harrison visited a London nightclub in the company of Brian Jones, Spencer Davis, Stevie Winwood and Tom McGuinness.” McGuinness was Manfred Mann’s bass player, and I bet he told that story a few times over the years.

Later, of course, Clapton would play guitar on “When My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Later still, the two would share several songwriting credits and, eventually, a wife. Not at the same time; Patti Boyd was married to Harrison from 1966 to 1974 and to Clapton from 1979 to 1988. In an odd twist, Harrison was the best man at Clapton’s wedding to his ex, as recounted in this nifty little clip I found on the Interwebs:
